According to the annual study released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there have been significant changes in the types of plastic surgery procedures patients are choosing over the last 15 years. While more traditional facial surgery and breast surgery procedures are still some of the most popular options, many men and women are choosing to address other areas of the body that had been less commonly targeted in years past.
For example, there was tremendous growth almost 5,000% in the number of upper arm lifts performed over the last 15 years (17,099 nationally in 2015, up from 338 in 2000). While the number of arm lifts performed is still significantly fewer than some of the most popular procedures such as breast augmentation or liposuction, the growth experienced by this procedure reflects a significant trend that is expected to continue over the next few years.
Other procedures which have demonstrated a tremendous increase in popularity over the last 15 years include:
- Breast lift
- Buttock augmentation
- Lower body lift
Women suffering from breast cancer who have undergone a mastectomy are choosing in greater numbers to opt for breast reconstruction surgery. Since 2000, the ASPS reports, breast reconstruction procedures have increased by 35%.
In total, there were 1.7 million plastic surgery procedures performed across America last year. Of these, the most popular were:
- Breast augmentation (279,143 procedures)
- Liposuction (222,051 procedures)
- Rhinoplasty (217,979 procedures)
- Blepharoplasty (203,934 procedures)
- Tummy tuck (127,967 procedures)
