Patients seek breast reductions for various reasons, ranging from cosmetic to better health and wellness. While we want to improve symptoms there is also a cosmetic element.
Most people initiate the consultation because they have back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, grooving of the shoulders or, difficulty finding a bra or sometimes all of the above. A lot of these patients are young patients whose breasts don’t match the rest of their body. Built into every breast reduction is also a breast lift. We don’t just reduce volume but we also reshape the breast to get rid of any droop or sag and replace that with a lifted, perkier breast that will look better in and out of clothing.
The typical surgery will take between an hour and a half and two and a half hours. Although it is an outpatient surgery, we sometimes will keep patients overnight. For some reason (not fully identified), breast surgery patients tend to have nausea. When we keep them overnight, we’re able to monitor them and administer nausea medication with I.V. access, as well as keep them hydrated. This type of surgery is typically not painful, and recovery is relatively short. By two weeks, patients are back to normal activities.
Breast reduction patients are happy patients. We are able to relieve their symptoms and improve their body image. It’s a win-win.
