When thinking about breast augmentation, there are a number of factors you should take into consideration. These include how big you want to go, incision placement, implant placement, and of course type of implant. While the type of implant you decide on is ultimately less important than the skill of the breast surgeon you choose, it is still something you should think about.

Our experienced plastic surgeons, Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir, will discuss breast implant types and help you decide which one to choose during your consultation. If you are interested in breast Breast implant types: silicone, saline, gummy bearaugmentation, please give us a call at 602-513-8133 today.

Silicone vs. Saline Breast Implants

The two main types of breast implant available are silicone and saline. Silicone implants are newer, and can be shaped and textured for a more natural feel. Saline implants have been around longer, and while they can feel firmer, they are the best choice if you want breasts on the larger side.

A newer type of implant that we offer is the “gummy bear” implant. This is a silicone implant that is firmer than normal and, like its namesake, retains its shape. Gummy bear implants are the most natural feeling option, and are less prone to rippling or leaking. However, since they cannot be compressed as much, they do require a longer incision.

Some of the main benefits and drawbacks to each type of implant are as follows:

  • Saline implants: Saline breast implants are filled after being placed, meaning that the incision can be very small and precise adjustments in size can be made. Silicone implants also allow for larger sizes than silicone. However, saline implants may cause a “ripple” effect on the breast in some women.
  • Silicone implants: Silicone breast implants are more natural feeling and less likely to cause rippling. Since they are pre-filled, size adjustments can’t be made, and there are limitations to how big they can go.
  • “Gummy bear” implants: These implants are the most natural looking and feeling, as they are teardrop shaped and softer than saline. They require larger incisions to fit through, though, and there is a small chance that the implant could flip, which would require a revision. Saline implants are round, so if they move in the pocket, often it’s unnoticeable.

Which Implant Type Should You Choose?

While we hope the information we’ve provided here is helpful, the only way to know which implant is right for your needs is to have an in-person consultation with one of our breast augmentation surgeons. They will be able to examine you, listen to your goals, and recommend the best implant type to help you meet those goals. Factors that go into which type of implant to choose can include:

  • Body type
  • Size goals
  • How much skin, tissue, and fat your breasts have
  • Lifestyle
  • Age

Our surgeons will work with you to choose the best implant and size to complement your frame and give you the best possible result. It’s best to come in with an open mind and listen to the expert opinions of our surgeons rather than to be set on a specific size or look. What is possible to accomplish for you may be limited by your individual anatomy, and what will look best may not be what you had in mind.

Back to Overview

A breast cancer diagnosis is overwhelming in so many ways. There are a lot of emotions. Dr. Ali Mosharrafa and his entire staff put me at ease at every step. After surgery, I was very self conscious, and the way I was treated with each visit helped me as much as the excellent medical care. Whether it is for an elective procedure or a surgery due to illness, I cannot endorse Dr. Ali more as a physician and human.
