Breast reconstruction is a big part of my practice and when a women is diagnosed with breast cancer, her world is turned upside down. Breast reconstruction, believe it or not, is one of the more fulfilling aspects of the entire care because it restores a woman to wholeness. On that note, it’s very important that you be informed about what questions are appropriate to ask when this diagnosis is first made.

Now keep this in mind. Your general surgeon, the surgeon that’s performing your breast cancer surgery, may not have offered you or may not offer you breast reconstruction as an option. And so sometimes it’s in the patient’s role to go out and seek information to find out what choices do they have as it relates to breast reconstruction. So when you’re meeting with your general surgeon and deciding on your final course of treatment for the breast cancer, it’s ok to ask that surgeon, “Am I a candidate for breast reconstruction? And if so, who would I see? Who would you recommend?”

Now in our practice, when we see patients for that first consultation and we start talking about breast reconstruction, there are several things that are important for you to know before you visit. First of all, try to assess in some way what priority this represents in your life. There are some women that, believe it or not, it’s not a priority to them. They don’t want to have breast reconstruction. And in that case, knowing that up front will save you a lot of energy.

Secondly, it’s important to know the experience of your surgeon. I think the most important question is, “How much breast reconstruction do you do?” The fact is there are many plastic surgeons that do a lot of breast reconstruction and some that do very little. This is an operation that’s one of the most challenging things we do in all of plastic surgery, and it depends upon the experience of your surgeon. Your outcome, I’ll say that again, depends on the experience of your surgeon. So don’t be afraid to ask this question: “Is this something you do regularly or is this something you do once in awhile? What is your experience with breast reconstruction patients?” You do want to be in the hands of a surgeon who’s done this many many times before, has proper training and has also proper compassion to help you through the process.

A breast cancer diagnosis is overwhelming in so many ways. There are a lot of emotions. Dr. Ali Mosharrafa and his entire staff put me at ease at every step. After surgery, I was very self conscious, and the way I was treated with each visit helped me as much as the excellent medical care. Whether it is for an elective procedure or a surgery due to illness, I cannot endorse Dr. Ali more as a physician and human.
