What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a popular skin rejuvenation treatment that stimulates the skin’s natural healing response, which in turn leads to collagen production and smoother, brighter skin. This happens by introducing microneedles into the skin to create micro-channels which jumpstart your skin’s natural wound-healing processes. This generates collagen and boosts cell turnover for healthy, rejuvenated skin over time.

Am I a Candidate?

Microneedling can be used on all skin tones, and is relatively painless. It can effectively address the following concerns:

  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Mild to moderate discoloration
  • Uneven skin texture

What Can I Expect During Microneedling?

Microneedling is performed at our Phoenix office. During treatment, tiny sterile needles are introduced into the surface of the skin to create channels in the skin. Once this process is complete, active ingredients are applied to the skin so that they can be more easily absorbed into the skin through the channels. Most patients can tolerate this process, but we can supply a topical numbing cream if needed.

A breast cancer diagnosis is overwhelming in so many ways. There are a lot of emotions. Dr. Ali Mosharrafa and his entire staff put me at ease at every step. After surgery, I was very self conscious, and the way I was treated with each visit helped me as much as the excellent medical care. Whether it is for an elective procedure or a surgery due to illness, I cannot endorse Dr. Ali more as a physician and human.

What is microneedling, and how does it work?

Microneedling is an aesthetic treatment that uses very fine needles to make micro-punctures in the skin. This process kickstarts the body’s natural healing process and stimulates collagen production to improve the look and feel of the skin. It can work on a number of skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, and uneven skin tone and texture.

Am I a candidate for microneedling?

Good candidates for microneedling are individuals in good overall health with realistic expectations and who have no active skin infections. You should also be struggling with signs of aging, acne scarring, pigmentation issues, and uneven skin texture. It’s also perfect for those looking for a minimally-invasive treatment to achieve a more youthful appearance.

What areas of the body can be treated with microneedling?

Microneedling can be used on many different areas of the body. It can be used on the face, neck, chest, arms and legs, and more.

Does microneedling hurt?

Microneedling is a virtually painless treatment. That said, we can apply a topical anesthetic prior to the procedure to ensure you’re completely comfortable. At most, you may feel a mild prickling sensation.

How many microneedling sessions will I need for optimal results?

Many patients require multiple microneeding sessions to receive the results they’re looking for. We often recommend 3-6 sessions for optimal results.

What is the downtime after microneedling?

There is very little downtime after microneedling treatment. You will likely experience swelling and redness for the first 24-72 hours, but those side effects will dissipate on their own. During this time, you will want to protect your skin from the sun using broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid strenuous activities.

When will I see results from microneedling?

It usually takes a few weeks to see the most significant results of microneedling as collagen builds up over time. For the best results, you may also need several treatment sessions.

Are there risks or side effects associated with microneedling?

Some of the side effects that are often associated with microneedling include swelling, redness, skin irritation, infection, and scarring, but while swelling and redness are more common, infection and scarring are more rare.

How does microneedling compare to other skin rejuvenation treatments?

Compared to some skin rejuvenation treatments, microneedling is typically gentler, can work on all skin types, and comes with a shorter recovery time, especially when compared to laser skin resurfacing. That said, most skin rejuvenation treatments stimulate collagen production to help you look younger.

How can I prepare for my microneedling appointment?

To prepare for your microneedling appointment, you’ll want to stay as hydrated as possible, avoid excess sun exposure, and avoid harsh skin treatments. You’ll also want to wear sunscreen and apply a gentle cleanser on the day of your appointment.
