The number of men who are considering plastic surgery, as well as undergoing various procedures, continues to rise. More than 1.3 million men decided to have a cosmetic procedure in 2017, according to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. While that number is already high, it is an increase of 30% compared to procedures performed in 2000.

A very common type of cosmetic surgery for men is gynecomastia, which is also known as a breast reduction. About 30% of men deal with this often-embarrassing issue known as “man boobs,” according to a 2014 study. Plastic surgeons are seeing this percentage grow consistently over the years, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that breast reduction surgeries in men have increased by 30% over the last half-decade. This is a bigger increase than any other type of cosmetic procedure for men. Here’s what to know about gynecomastia surgery and how it can help.

What is Gynecomastia?

Most cases of gynecomastia occur around puberty and resolve without treatment. The most common cause of persistent gynecomastia is a hormonal imbalance. This can be from either low levels of testosterone or too-high levels of estrogen in the body. There are also many external factors that can cause gynecomastia, such as chemotherapy drugs or antidepressants. Some recreational drugs can also cause gynecomastia to occur, like marijuana. Steroid use is still another reason men can develop gynecomastia. Steroids cause hormonal imbalance that then leads to excess fat and tissue development in the breasts.

Why Choose Surgery for Gynecomastia?

Many men try to lose their enlarged breasts on their own through weight loss. However, while these solutions may somewhat help, surgery is the best way to permanently reduce the size of a man’s breasts if the breast tissue has become enlarged. In some cases, men grow out of gynecomastia especially if it occurs around puberty. Some men don’t grow out of it and require a treatment plan. Surgery is often recommended after other options have been explored.

Growing Your Confidence With the Right Plastic Surgeon

As more and more men report positive experiences when it comes to plastic surgery, others are beginning to choose plastic surgery themselves. Many men report feeling better about themselves, both physically and mentally, after gynecomastia surgery. Their quality of life has improved tremendously from the reduction, and they are happy they decided to undergo the procedure.

A breast cancer diagnosis is overwhelming in so many ways. There are a lot of emotions. Dr. Ali Mosharrafa and his entire staff put me at ease at every step. After surgery, I was very self conscious, and the way I was treated with each visit helped me as much as the excellent medical care. Whether it is for an elective procedure or a surgery due to illness, I cannot endorse Dr. Ali more as a physician and human.
