Time, unfortunately, waits for no one. As we grow older, our skin bears increasing signs of age. Sun damage, rosacea, acne scars, and a host of other conditions combine to reveal the passing of youth. Common methods of concealment, such as makeup or skin creams, only provide partial and short-term cosmetic solutions. Technology, however, has produced a more effective means of skincare through IPL photofacials.

What is IPL?

An IPL, or photofacial, is a simple, non-surgical way to restore skin texture and color to nearly all areas of the body. IPL (intense pulsed light) uses light therapy to affect the deeper skin layers. This makes it particularly effective for the treatment of sun damage, rosacea, spider veins, and other pigment imperfections. One of the many positive aspects of IPL is that it only consists of flashing light, which means it does not require injections or incisions. Medical studies of the long-term effects of IPL have shown it to significantly reduce signs of aging.

How IPL Works

IPL treatment is a process that directs pulses of light deep into the skin. This increases collagen production and constricts blood vessels under the epidermis, which reduces lines and redness. The process also helps to reveal new cells and has a rejuvenating influence on the targeted areas. The overall effect of these actions is healthier, thicker skin.

The Photofacial Procedure

A medical practitioner will pass a handheld light-emitting device along the skin’s surface after applying the cooling gel to the affected area. It is common to experience slight discomfort during the procedure. The sensation is warm and often described as slight pinching or snapping of tiny rubber bands.

After the aesthetician has removed the cooling gel, the skin will likely be red with slight swelling. These side-effects usually only last a few hours and can be minimized by a cold compress. The amount of time it takes to complete the process is determined by the size of the target area and averages between 30 and 60 minutes. Most patients resume their day as it was before the treatment with no downtime.

What to Expect

You can typically see IPL Photofacial results after just one treatment. Spots caused by the sun and age will be removed by the process of exfoliation. Blood vessels will be repaired and made less visible. There will also be a noticeable decrease in lines and wrinkles. As few as three treatments, a year have proved to support younger-looking skin.

We live in a health-conscious era that is abundant in information and treatments for almost any condition. Aging does not have to look and feel like it has in past generations. With a procedure as convenient and affordable as photofacial, why shouldn’t your appearance match your vitality?
