A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a procedure that complements a healthy lifestyle to give you a flatter stomach and smaller waist.

There are two types of tummy tucks: a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. Choosing the right option for you will require consulting a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Ali M. Mosharrafa or Dr. Tamir Mosharrafa.

Tummy Tuck Basics

Tummy tucks are considered a body contouring procedure. They are performed on men and women who have excess abdominal skin that is loose or saggy. This condition is common after drastic weight loss and pregnancy where the size of the belly decreases greatly, but the extra skin persists.

Loose abdominal skin can make it difficult to feel and look your best. It’s especially frustrating when you’ve worked hard to get healthy and improve your appearance, but nothing works to give you a toned, flat stomach.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

In a tummy tuck procedure, our surgeons will remove extra skin and, if necessary, tighten abdominal muscles. It is not uncommon for the abdominal wall to be damaged with pregnancy, resulting in a protruding belly and abdominal weakness.

The good news is that this condition can be repaired by a qualified plastic surgeon, helping you to look better and providing the health benefits of improved posture. Once the muscles are tightened and the skin is positioned to better fit your body, the incision is closed, and you’re on your way to recovery.

It is important to understand that while some excess fat is removed as part of a tummy tuck, this isn’t the primary purpose of the procedure. Patients who have stubborn belly fat may want to consider liposuction, with or without a tummy tuck, to address this goal.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck may be right for you if your tummy issues are below your belly button. For example, skin folds or a pooch in the lower abdomen can be addressed by a mini tummy tuck. This procedure is less complex than a full tummy tuck, as it is focused on a smaller area. Mini tummy tucks also have shorter recovery times.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck focuses on the whole abdomen. If your aesthetic concerns are not limited to below the belly button, a fully tummy tuck is likely a better option for you. For instance, if your stomach bulges due to weakened or damaged muscles, and you also have excess skin below the belly button, a full tummy tuck can address both issues.

With a full tummy tuck, extra skin and fat will be eliminated, and muscles will be tightened to achieve a flatter shape in the abdominal region. A full tummy tuck may decrease visibility of stretch marks as well.

Tummy Tuck Outcomes

With either a mini or full tummy tuck, you will lose inches around your waist. Clothes will fit better, and form-fitted garments will look more flattering on your new figure.

Scarring at the incision areas is often a concern. However, Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir take two important steps to minimize this issue. First, the incision is made so that any scar would be hidden under a bathing suit. Second, the doctors use embrace® Advanced Scar Therapy. This biomechanical dressing is applied a week or two after your tummy tuck, and it works to reduce the appearance of scars.
