Deciding to get a mommy makeover can be a big step toward a more confident you. But, it’s normal to have concerns about what to expect. If you’re dreaming of getting your pre-baby body back but are concerned about noticeable scarring, you’re not alone. Any plastic surgery procedure will cause scarring, but a board-certified plastic surgeon can help you explore ways to ensure it’s as subtle as possible. Here’s what to know about mommy makeover scarring and what you can expect at Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery.

What causes scarring?

Scarring is a natural process your skin undertakes to heal incisions, cuts, or scrapes. When the skin is cut, your body’s natural wound-healing response kicks in. Your skin begins to produce new collagen to repair the skin. Sometimes, however, the skin produces collagen that doesn’t match the natural pigmentation of your skin (or it produces too much or too little). In any of these cases, it causes a noticeable scar. Large surgical incisions are more likely to cause scarring than small cuts and unfortunately, plastic surgeons haven’t yet found a way to reliably perform surgery without causing some degree of scarring.

Where will I have scars?

The best part about a mommy makeover is that it can be customized to your exact needs. This means that scarring will be unique to the procedures you include in your mommy makeover. There are some procedures that produce scarring in specific areas, however. These include:

  • Tummy tuck: Incisions are placed across the hips within the natural bikini line
  • Breast augmentation: Incisions are most commonly placed in the breast fold although many incision patterns exist
  • Arm lift: Incisions are placed underneath the bicep or along the back of the upper arm

Liposuction is another common procedure in mommy makeovers, and it can typically be performed using the same incisions as your tummy tuck or breast surgery. If you opt for liposuction on another area like the hips or lower back, though, you may have small scars from those incisions.

How do I fade scars?

One of the best ways to ensure against visible scarring is following your plastic surgeon’s aftercare instructions. Beyond that, you can also get good results by practicing good skincare, protecting it from sun exposure, and discussing professional skincare treatments with your plastic surgeon (IPL and microneedling are especially effective for scars). With the right approach, you can make sure your scars are unnoticeable so you can feel confident in every situation – so don’t let it turn you away from pursuing your mommy makeover goals.

Back to Overview

A breast cancer diagnosis is overwhelming in so many ways. There are a lot of emotions. Dr. Ali Mosharrafa and his entire staff put me at ease at every step. After surgery, I was very self conscious, and the way I was treated with each visit helped me as much as the excellent medical care. Whether it is for an elective procedure or a surgery due to illness, I cannot endorse Dr. Ali more as a physician and human.
