Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants have an outer silicone shell and are filled with a sterile saline solution. They are approved by the FDA for use with women age 18 and older.
Saline implants offer several important benefits, including:
- The implant is filled with saline solution after being inserted into your body. This allows Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir to make precise adjustments in size and volume as needed. It also makes it easier for our surgeons to correct breast asymmetry issues.
- A smaller incision can be made with saline implants, minimizing scarring.
- If your breast implant ruptures, it is immediately known, and the sterile saline solution is safely absorbed by your body.
The primary drawback associated with saline breast implants is that they have a slightly less natural feel than the other silicone-based options. As a result, they may not be the best option for petite women with minimal natural breast tissue. In addition, saline implants:
- Are more prone to rippling
- Deflate during a rupture, creating an uneven breast appearance that must be corrected with a breast augmentation revision procedure
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants have a silicone shell that gets filled with a silicone gel material. They are approved by the FDA for use with women age 22 and older. Unlike saline implants, silicone implants are pre-filled by the manufacturer to the exact volume requested by Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir.
Silicone breast implants have a more natural feel than saline implants, making them a very popular option. Other benefits of silicone implants include:
- In the event of a rupture, the silicone gel material maintains its shape, preventing an uneven breast appearance
- Less prone to issues such as rippling
However, due to the fact that silicone breast implants maintain their shape, it's difficult to tell that a rupture has occurred. As a result, Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir recommend that you undergo an MRI occasionally to check for any potential ruptures.
"Gummy Bear" Breast Implants
The newest breast implant option to be approved by the FDA is the "gummy bear" implant. It consists of a silicone shell filled with a form stable silicone gel. This implant got its "gummy bear" nickname due to the fact that it's made of a cohesive gel material that retains its shape even when it's cut, just like the candy it's named after.
The greatest advantage of the gummy bear implant is that it has the most natural look and feel of any breast implant option. The form stable cohesive gel mimics the look of a natural breast. It also has a teardrop shape that more closely resembles the shape of a natural breast.
Other benefits of gummy bear implants include:
- Less prone to shell folds or leakage
- Less visible rippling
Due to the fact that gummy bear implants cannot be compressed during insertion, they require a longer incision. This results in a slightly larger scar compared with the other breast implant options available to you.
Choosing the Right Breast Implant Type
During your consultation, Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir will discuss the pros and cons of each option with you in detail. They will also listen carefully to your goals and concerns in order to recommend the ideal option to deliver the beautiful, natural looking results you desire.
