Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly are crucial to maintaining a toned, fit figure. However, these efforts can only do so much. Our bodies are genetically predisposed to store fat in certain locations, and often these are the last places where you want the fat to go. If you have struggled to get rid of a few stubborn pockets of fat that do not seem to respond to your diet and exercise efforts, then liposuction may be an ideal way to help you achieve the figure you desire.
The best way to find out whether liposuction is the right option to deliver your desired body contouring results is to speak with Dr. Ali Mosharrafa or Dr. Tamir Mosharrafa in person. Please call (602) 883-4483 today to schedule your complimentary consultation at our Phoenix plastic surgery office.

Benefits of Liposuction
Liposuction can truly be a life-changing experience for many of our patients. Some of the benefits you may receive include:
- An improved body contour and more toned, fit figure
- Improved health associated with fat loss
- Motivation to maintain a healthier, more active lifestyle in the future in order to maintain your new figure
- Improved self-image and increased self-confidence
Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?
Ideal liposuction candidates are in good overall health, near their target weight, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure. Liposuction can be used to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat in most areas of your body, including your:
- Abdomen and waist
- Chest (typically as part of a male breast reduction procedure)
Often, Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir will recommend liposuction as part of a mommy makeover procedure in order to help you restore your figure to its pre-pregnancy form.
Your Customized Liposuction Procedure
Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir use the following liposuction techniques:
- Tumescent liposuction
- Ultrasonic liposuction
They’ll choose the right option for you based on the area being treated and whether it’s an initial procedure or a revision liposuction procedure.
Tumescent liposuction uses a special tumescent fluid that gets injected into the treatment region in order to make it easier to break up the fat. Then, a small, hollow tube called a cannula will remove the unwanted fat via suction.
When the ultrasonic liposuction technique is used, the cannula also emits ultrasonic energy in order to liquefy the fat, facilitating its break-up and removal, as well as achieving more skin tightening.
Once your procedure has been completed, Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir will review your post-surgical aftercare instructions to ensure you take the steps necessary to ensure a smooth recovery. Due to the use of anesthesia with your procedure, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day. It's important to get plenty of rest immediately following surgery, and make sure to drink a lot of fluids to avoid dehydration.
Make sure you take all medications as directed to manage any soreness or discomfort and to help prevent infection. You'll also need to wear a compression garment for the first few weeks of recovery to control swelling and reduce your recovery time.
You will return to our Phoenix plastic surgery office for a follow-up visit in 2-3 days. Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir will let you know whether it is safe to return to work during this visit. In most instances, resuming work after a week is fine, but the exact timetable will depend on the specifics of your recovery.
Exercise after Liposuction
Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir will give you detailed instructions during your follow-up visits regarding when you can resume exercise. It's important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure proper healing.
While the timetable for resuming exercise varies based on your unique situation, you can generally begin with light walking within the first few days of your recovery. This initial light activity is important for preventing blood clots and other complications.
Over the first week or two of your recovery, you can gradually increase your levels of activity, and by the end of this time, you should be able to engage in most normal activities. While you may feel normal at this point, it is important to remember that your recovery is not complete. You will not be able to resume strenuous activities and physical exercise for about 4-6 weeks. Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir will let you know when you're cleared to resume all physical activity.
Your initial results should be visible within one or two weeks. However, these results will gradually continue to improve as your swelling subsides during the healing process. It may take several months before the final results are visible.
It's important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly following your procedure in order to maintain your liposuction results. While the fat cells removed during liposuction will not return, it's still possible to gain weight if you don't live a healthy, active lifestyle. Often, you may find that fat gets deposited in areas that were previously not problematic if you gain weight in the future, resulting in an unbalanced body contour.
Liposuction Risks and Complications
While liposuction is a very safe procedure and complications rarely occur, there is always some degree of risk associated with all surgical procedures. It's important that you understand these risks before deciding whether to move forward with your procedure.
Potential complications that are common to all surgical procedures include:
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia
- Contour irregularities
Potential complications that are specific to liposuction, while rare, may include:
- Changes in skin sensitivity -- You may experience increased tenderness or loss of sensation in the treatment region. This commonly occurs to some degree with most liposuction patients; however, it's typically temporary and will go away over the first few months following your procedure.
- Skin irregularities -- If you have poor skin elasticity, you may experience stretch marks, cellulite or skin dimples in the treatment region. This risk can be reduced by undergoing post-operative massage in the treatment region.
- Loose skin -- Poor skin elasticity may also result in loose skin in the treatment region. A revision procedure can be performed to tighten this loose skin.
Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir are both board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. They have undergone extensive training and performed thousands of liposuction procedures during their careers. This ensures they have the background and experience to provide you with the safest possible conditions during your procedure.
In addition, safety is an extremely high priority for our surgeons and they go to great lengths to ensure optimal levels safety throughout the entire process. This ensures that your risk of complications remains extremely low. You can further reduce these risks by diligently following the after-care instructions we provide.
Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir perform revision liposuction procedures for patients who aren't satisfied with the results of a previous procedure performed by another surgeon. Revision procedures are often more complex than initial liposuction procedures and require an experienced surgeon who can address the issues specific to revision surgery.
Our board certified plastic surgeons have 20 years of experience performing liposuction procedures and have the extensive training necessary to deliver the results you desire in a revision procedure. Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir feel it's crucial to address all problems that exist and perform a procedure with the highest chances of success and lowest possible risk during a revision procedure. This is the best way to deliver a result that will make you happy.
Liposuction Is Not a Tool for Weight Loss
Keep in mind that liposuction is a body contouring procedure intended to sculpt your figure. It is not a weight loss method. If you are looking to lose weight, you’ll need to accomplish this before you can be considered a good liposuction candidate. Once you’re near your target weight, Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir can use liposuction to put the finishing touches on your efforts.
Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir will always recommend removing a moderate amount of fat since this will typically maintain optimal levels of safety and deliver the most natural looking results. Removing a very large amount of fat can potentially increase your risk of complications.
