Some of the most common surgeries performed in the U.S. last year included procedures frequently done at Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the top five cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2013 were: liposuctions, breast augmentations, eyelid surgeries, tummy tucks and nose surgeries. We discussed some of these results in last week’s blog. This week, the team at Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery is analyzing the report’s top five non-surgical procedures conducted in the last year.
According to the press release, more than 2.5 billion dollars was spent on injectables in 2013, with Botulinum Toxin (i.e. Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) being the most frequently performed noninvasive procedure. Moreover, roughly 1.9 billion was spent on skin rejuvenation services, contributing to a 13.1 percent (roughly 9.5 million procedures) increase since 2012. The top five nonsurgical procedures can be seen below:
Botulinum Toxin- This substance, commonly known as Botox, temporarily weakens or paralyzes facial muscles and smooths or eliminates the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This was the most popular treatment performed with over 3,766,148 procedures reported in the year 2013. Botox generally lasts 3 to 4 months and is considered a less painful alternative to more permanent wrinkle-reducing procedures (i.e. face-lift, laser resurfacing, etc.).
Hyaluronic Acid- Also known as dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid was the second most popular aesthetic treatment option with 1,872,172 procedures performed in the last year. Fillers add volume and are commonly injected around the eyes, brow mouth lips or neck. Fillers are meant to either fill in wrinkles or contour parts of the face. Hyaluronic acid may be combined with botulinum toxin to achieve an overall youthful appearance.
Hair Removal- Laser hair removal has become a popular choice for women wishing to permanently remove hair on parts of the body. Laser or pulsate light destroys the roots of the hair follicle and about 901,571 procedures were performed in 2013.
Microdermabrasion- This noninvasive, skin resurfacing treatment gently exfoliates dead skill cells on the face to promote collagen production and reveal healthy, smooth skin. Approximately 479,865 procedures were performed in 2013. Patients should consider microdermabrasion is they want to diminish fine lines, blemishes, dull skin, age spots and more. This procedure is relatively painless and produces incredible results.
Photo Rejuvenation- A slightly newer form of facial rejuvenation, photo rejuvenation uses intense broadband light to reduce the appearance of brown spots, excess blood vessels and redness. Roughly 456,613 procedures were performed last year.

A breast cancer diagnosis is overwhelming in so many ways. There are a lot of emotions. Dr. Ali Mosharrafa and his entire staff put me at ease at every step. After surgery, I was very self conscious, and the way I was treated with each visit helped me as much as the excellent medical care. Whether it is for an elective procedure or a surgery due to illness, I cannot endorse Dr. Ali more as a physician and human.
