Breast Augmentation Incision

I’m Dr. Ali Mosharrafa. Let’s talk about what is the best placement for the breast augmentation incision. Well, there are three choices. One is under the arm, or the transaxillary incision. One is around the areola, or the peri-areolar icision. And one is underneath the breast, which we call the inframammary incision. My preference is the inframammary incision, which is underneath the breast, for these reasons: First of all, it’s the only location where anything you wear publicly will never show that scar. The underarm scar is visible and is an unsightly scar that can be a problem for patients. The scar around the areola is visible to you when you are looking in the mirror, dressing each morning, whereas the inframammary scar is hidden from your view each morning. Then, lastly and most importantly, it’s the easiest way to do the surgery. What that means is it presents the fewest complications. So, my preference is the inframammary incision. It’s three centimeters long, just over an inch long for all patients, and has, again, the easiest surgical approach, the fewest complications, and is most well-accepted by patients.
