As we get older, we all will inevitably begin to experience signs of facial aging. If you are experiencing these signs of aging and would like to restore a more youthful appearance, you have a variety of options. While nonsurgical treatments such as injectables and fillers provide temporary facial rejuvenation results, no treatment can rival a facelift for its ability to deliver customized, long lasting results.
As you consider the different facial rejuvenation alternatives available to you, you may be wondering if there is an ideal age to undergo a facelift. This is a great question that Dr. Ali and Dr. Tamir often hear from patients during a facelift consultation. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question.
There is no one ideal age for a facelift. The right time varies for each individual patient. In general, most facelift patients undergo the procedure between the ages of 40 and 60. However, it is important to understand that you can still achieve excellent results after the age of 60.
While there is no commonly agreed upon “best age” for a facelift, research indicates that younger people tend to experience greater satisfaction and longer lasting results. A recent study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery validates this notion.
The study evaluated the long term satisfaction and results achieved by a facelift based on the age of the patient. Participants in the study were grouped into three different age categories:
- Under 50
- 50-60
- Over 60
In addition, before and after photos were evaluated both one year after surgery and ten years after surgery to determine the extent to which long lasting results were achieved. There were five regions evaluated when these photos were viewed:
- The area between eyelid skin and cheek skin
- Marionette lines (the line extending from the corner of the lip to the jaw)
- Nasolabial folds (the line extending from the nose to the corner of the mouth)
- Muscle banding and excess fat in the neck region
- Jowls
Overall, the study found that younger patients exhibited both longer term results and greater satisfaction with their outcome. Patients undergoing a facelift before they turned 50 maintained a more youthful appearance for significantly longer than patients in the other two age categories. In addition, the under 50 group rated their initial and long term satisfaction as being higher than patients in the other two age groups.
Based on this evidence, you may want to consider moving forward with a facelift at a slightly earlier age since it may increase the likelihood that you will achieve longer lasting results and be happier with your outcome.
