After breast augmentation surgery, many women wonder when they can start wearing a bra again. Shopping for a new bra wardrobe in your new, bigger cup size can be exciting, and lots of our patients look forward to it. However, you should take some time before wearing a bra again, and even more time before buying bras for your permanent collection.
When to wear a bra again after breast augmentation surgery depends partially on the type of breast implant you had placed. If you had saline implants, you shouldn’t wear a bra at all for up to 30 days. If you had gummy bear implants, our Phoenix plastic surgeons will likely recommend that you wear a sports bra for compression and support.
If you are interested in breast augmentation, please call Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery at 602-513-8133 to schedule your initial consultation. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
When to Invest in a New Bra
Although you can start wearing a bra again after 30 days (if you had saline or regular silicone implants) or 6 weeks (with gummy bear implants), we recommend not spending a lot of money on one until after 3 months minimum. This is because swelling from breast augmentation can last for a while, and will interfere with your ability to be accurately sized for a new bra. You probably don’t want to drop a lot of money on a brand-new bra that doesn’t end up fitting right.
If you need to wear a bra before all your swelling has fully dissipated, we recommend buying an inexpensive, comfortable bra with no underwire. Underwired bras can irritate your incisions, so it’s best to avoid to them until you’re completely healed up.
Smooth vs. Textured Breast Implant Recovery
Smooth, round saline or silicone implants need time to fully settle and drop into their final shape. Wearing any type of bra for the first 30 days after breast augmentation surgery can potentially cause irregularities in your final shape, which we want to avoid. Although the risk is slim, we feel it’s better to be safe.
On the other hand, textured, teardrop-shaped breast implants often need a little help in terms of compression and support. If a smooth, round implants moves slightly in the pocket, it’s fine, but you don’t want a teardrop-shaped implant to flip over. Wearing a properly fitted sports bra night and day after breast augmentation surgery with a textured implant allows the implant to firmly mold into the pocket.
Dr. Ali or Dr. Tamir will fully explain everything you need to know about your breast augmentation recovery, and will answer any questions you have at any time during the process. They will give you detailed instructions in order to help make your recovery process as smooth and painless as possible.
