A very common question that I’m asked during a facelift consultation is, “How much younger is this operation going to make me look?” Well, this answer obviously has to consider your age at the time of surgery. The degree to which your skin has aged which can be affected by cigarette smoking, sun exposure, genetics. All of those things affect your skin’s elasticity and in turn affect the amount of time you’re going to get benefit from the facelift procedure. But, to give you an answer, it’s usually somewhere between 8 and 10 years. A well done facelift lasts about 8 to 10 years. If it lasts less than that, either you have very poor skin quality, or you’ve had a surgical procedure that perhaps was underdone. If it lasts longer than 8 to 10 years, chances are the tissues were pulled too tight, and that’s not an option for me, because you’re going to spend most of your recovery period looking like someone you’re not. We don’t want to overdo your procedure. So in summary, a well done cosmetic facelift should last about 8 to 10 years in most patients.
